Review: Lancome Noir Artliner

Lancome Artliner Precision Point Eyeliner ($30.00 at lancome-usa.com) is a matte black eyeliner described by Lancome as a "liquid pen featuring a uniquely shaped foam tip that lets you line, shape and define eyes to create any look you like."  The pointed felt tip works well to draw both thick and thin lines, but fails to stay put for even an hour--something that not even E.L.F. eyeliners do.  Here is my review.

If you love precise control over your eyeliner application, then you'll love Lancome Artliner.  The eyeliner is essentially a quill pen for your eyes; to use it, you have to dip your applicator felt tip into the ink reservoir, which twists off easily.

Because the liner is in felt tip form, I didn't have to worry about excess eyeliner.  The felt tip soaks up the liquid nicely, allowing for smooth, tug-free application along the lashline.  Getting a thick, solid cat eye with this eyeliner is very easy, as the felt tip glides against the skin, producing even, non-streaky lines.  You can also create small, thin lines with the applicator, but you'll need a steady hand to produce a clean line.

Note: Although the felt tip is nice, I find that it doesn't soak up enough liquid.  Halfway into inking my first eye, the ink ran out so I had to re-dip...then re-dip...then re-dip some more, etc.  It's annoying, but not a deal breaker.

The wear of this eyeliner is disappointingly bad; its wear is even worse than E.L.F. liquid eyeliner, which I find inexcusable considering E.L.F.'s eyeliner is only $1.00, $29.00 cheaper than the Lancome eyeliner.  30 minutes after I applied Artliner, there was visible flaking and disintegration around the inner corners of my eye.  Even more disintegrated two hours after application, all while I was sitting sedentary in a moving car.
Left: Some slight flaking in the inner corners 30 minutes after application. Right: 2 hours later, the flaking gets worse.

A close-up of the disintegration in the inner eyelid corner 2 hours after application.
Since my first experiment, I've used Lancome Artliner an additional five to six times, but all produce the same result: Flaking and disintegration no less than an hour after application.  I'm not sure what it is about the Lancome formula that is making it disintegrate so easily, but I'm hardly pleased by it.

There's nothing special about this eyeliner color--just a simple, matte black.  Some areas of the eyeliner can look shiny after a while, but otherwise it looks very dark and matte against the eyelids.  This is a great color for creating an everyday look.  If you're looking for something softer and more natural, Lancome Artliner in Brown or Smoke are good alternatives.

Would I Repurchase?
Sorry, but I'll pass.  While I like the felt tip and smooth application, the eyeliner just doesn't want to stay put on my eyelids.  I've used drugstore eyeliners way better than this!

  1. Wow, how disappointing! Maybe you got a bad batch? I usually hear praise for Lancome eyeliners. It's a shame it didn't work for you.

    1. That's what I though too...it appears this issue has been happening to a handful of other people too though. Bummer! Hope Lancome's other makeup is better.

  2. What a great review! It's very helpful! Great pictures!
